Common names: Gooseberry globemallow, Gooseberry-leaf globemallow. Description: Sphaeralcea grossulariifolia is a perennial shrub that grows 6 to 10 cm in height. The stems have a woody base and white-canescent (white hairs) to deal with high temperatures. The leaves are green to green-gray blades that are deeply lobed and also have white canescence. It blooms from mid spring to late fall and repeatedly blooms through out the season. Blossoms range from coral to orange and apricot. Fruit it segmented 10 – 12 sections and 1 gray glabrous seed per segment. Climate: Prefers volcanic soils and hot dry conditions. Prefer full sun to intermediate shade. Roots grow deeply to access deep soil moisture avoiding desiccation during drought periods. Geographic distribution: There are 40 species in the Sphaeralcea family and 15 in the intermountain region of North America. They are only natively found on the intermountain west of North America.
