Andropogon gerardii

The Andropogon gerardii, or more commonly known as the big bluestem.
Environment and Location:

Big bluestem is a native grass that spans across most of the United States. It is found in all the continental states except for those on or near the West Coast (as shown in the picture below, green states indicate plant presence). This plant has a moderate to high tolerance of most stressful conditions, including any soil texture, moderate fluctuations in soil pH, anaerobic conditions, soil salinity and even drought and fire.

Characteristics:

The big bluestem is a perennial grass that may grow to a height of 6-7 feet at maturity. Its main growth period is during the summer months. It produces a large number of seeds mainly in the mid-summer to fall, but does not spread very quickly. This grass is also highly palatable to both grazing and browsing animals.

Uses:

Big bluestem is presently utilized in many different manners. It is a key part of the restoration of native grasslands. Soil erosion is often limited by the planting of the big bluestem. Landscapers also plant this grass. Many animals use the big bluestem as a food source, while many others use it as their home and nests. Chippewa Indians used this plant as an herbal medicine. It can be used as a diuretic or as analgesic. They utilized it in many other aspects of their lives as well, such as in food preparation.
