Desert and steppe ecosystems

Lecture Notes (1 MB)
Reading: Bailey Ch. 7
Arid regions dominate much of North America and other parts of the world. In today's lecture, we will discuss the different deserts found around the world and what they have in common and how they differ. The roles of edaphic factors, winter versus summer precipitation, winter temperatures, and coastal versus interior locations are each discussed. The slide show will focus on the Atacama Desert of South America.
