[All 100 points on the upcoming exam will relate to the following data and observations. You are free to discuss these data and observations among your selves. Be familiar with what these data might indicate regarding the plant adaptation and acclimation patterns we have been discussing in class.]
Winthrop Weatherly has a younger brother Winston. Winston is the lucky one who got one of Spot's puppies, before Spot and Winthrop went on their trip across North America. You might recall that this puppy was named "Blemish", because his father was a Belgium dalmation. It may not surprise you to hear that Winston Weatherly is a plant ecologist too, but he specializes in plant adaptation and plant acclimation to various environmental stresses. As a youth, however, Winston was religious and, after graduation he became a Catholic priest. Soon thereafter his true interests in plant ecology came through and he went back to get his doctoral degree. Now he is an Assistant Professor at Notre Dame University, about to be considered for promotion and tenure - - and he is in serious trouble. You see, while Winston is good and careful at collecting data, he never seems to find the time to analyze it, much less to write it up for publication. Last week, the Dean at Notre Dame called Winston in and angrily gave him the ultimatum , "Winston, it's either publish or parish".
We know that Winston enjoys conducting field and laboratory research, but not much more about his interests since he has published so little. Here are a few excerpts from Winston's data books.
